Boston Education Collaborative
Churches and Christian organizations have been instrumental in positively impacting the lives of urban students and their families. However, they often face challenges in collaboration, capacity building, recruiting volunteers, and accessing resources.
The Boston Education Collaborative (BEC) empowers churches, schools and non-profits to support underserved urban students. BEC helps students thrive in all areas of life by nurturing and supporting church-school partnerships; facilitating and encouraging neighborhood-focused involvement; engaging in systems level work; and participating in broader networking, coaching, and learning opportunities. BEC is responding to the educational challenges in Boston and other nearby cities by supporting churches and providing space for learning hubs.
Our Work
Church- School Partnerships: We build intentional relationships and partnerships between schools and churches/faith-based organizations
Mobilizing Volunteers: We recruit, train and support Christians to support urban students and families in schools or out-of-school time programs.
Learning Communities: We foster spaces where Christians engage in education, youth development, and church-school partnerships can with and from one another
Carolina’s Story
The college graduation rate for black and Latino public high school students is 25%. Passport to College, a program of the Higher Education Resource Center (HERC) addresses this need directly through a two year college prep course which develops perseverance and skills for long-term success.
Since 2004, Passport has encouraged its scholars to ask themselves, “What am I here to achieve? How do I get there?” Carolina De Jesus, director, thinks systemically about urban education with the Boston Education Collaborative (a ministry of the Emmanuel Gospel Center), which has clarified the need to be more intentional about following the students through college. Students participating in Passport to College have a college graduation rate of 87%.
